Gyeonggi-do Achieves Record High Kimchi Production Value with 87.2% Increase from Previous Year
The production value of Gim (seaweed) in Gyeonggi Province has reached an all-time high.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that this year's Gim production volume was 21,846 tons, about 3% less than the same period last year (22,513 tons), but the production value increased by a whopping 87.2% to 40.89 billion KRW. This is the highest amount since Gim farming began in Gyeonggi Province.
The province attributes the increase in production value to a surge in exports due to poor Gim harvests in Japan and nationwide poor Gim crop conditions.
To ensure safe and stable Gim production, Gyeonggi Province invests more than 600 million KRW annually to support Gim farms in Hwaseong and Ansan cities, and continuously enforces strict crackdowns and comprehensive maintenance against unauthorized use of harmful chemicals and illegal facilities.

Kim Bong-hyun, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Although fishermen's income has significantly increased due to the rise in the auction price of fresh Gim this year, the production volume is decreasing due to changes in the marine environment caused by rising water temperatures, so we cannot guarantee continuous income. We will do our best to develop new projects such as seed development to respond to climate change and promote sustainable development of the Gim farming industry."
