Wando-gun Launches Crackdown on Illegal Fishing to Protect Marine Resources
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeonnam Province, and Related Agencies Jointly Promote
Crackdown on Illegal Fishing, Unlicensed Aquaculture Facilities, and Illegal Capture of Juvenile Fish
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 23rd that, to protect marine resources during the spring spawning season of fish and shellfish, it has been conducting joint crackdowns on illegal fishing activities for one month since the 1st, in cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeollanam-do, and related organizations.
The main targets of the crackdown are acts that disrupt fishing order, such as illegal fishing operations, unlicensed aquaculture facilities, illegal capture of juvenile fish, and the use of illegal fishing gear.
Those caught engaging in illegal fishing activities will face judicial measures according to fisheries-related laws, and administrative actions such as suspension of fishing activities or cancellation of fishing permits will be taken against fishing vessels.
In addition, to promote a culture of lawful fishing among fishermen, inspections and guidance are being conducted on the distribution and sale of illegally caught fish at major local fish markets, and intensive crackdowns are underway in vulnerable fishing areas.
Besides this joint crackdown on illegal fishing, Wando-gun plans to establish its own measures to eradicate chronic illegal fishing by conducting ongoing inspections and guidance throughout the year.
A county official stated, “We will strengthen fishing guidance and crackdowns to establish fishing order and protect marine resources,” adding, “We hope fishermen will also comply with relevant laws and conduct their fishing activities safely.”
