Medical School Expansion Repeatedly Rejected... Gyeongsang National University and Jeonbuk National University Academic Regulation Amendments Defeated
At Gyeongsang National University and Jeonbuk National University, proposed amendments to the academic regulations aimed at increasing the quota for medical school admissions were consecutively rejected.
According to Gyeongsang National University on the 22nd, the proposed amendment related to the increase in medical school admissions was rejected at the faculty and university council meeting held at the Gajwa Campus university headquarters that day. As a result, the decision made the previous day to increase the medical school quota from 76 to 138 was nullified within a day.
The proposed amendment to increase the medical school quota reportedly failed to gain majority approval both in the faculty council composed of professors and in the university council composed of staff and students.
A Gyeongsang National University official stated, "The majority of the council members judged that the current facilities and faculty cannot accommodate 138 students," adding, "We need to observe the situation further to see what decision President Kwon Soon-gi will make regarding this."
Jeonbuk National University also failed to pass the amendment at the faculty council meeting held that afternoon.
Jeonbuk National University had announced a partial amendment to the academic regulations on the 10th to increase the admission quota from 142 to 200 in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s policy.
After a 10-day period of collecting opinions, a council composed of 47 professors elected from each college was convened that day. The council is a stage for gathering professors’ opinions for and against the amendment.
