Nonsan-si, Evaluation of 'Strawberry LED Single-Span Multi-Stage Cultivation' Pilot Project
Strawberry Harvest Yield Over 1.6 Times Higher Than Before, Exceeding Advanced Agricultural Countries by More Than 30%
On the 22nd, Nonsan City in Chungnam announced that it held an evaluation meeting for the pilot project of the ‘Strawberry LED Single-Span Multi-Tier Cultivation’ developed to guarantee farmers' income.
The single-span multi-tier cultivation method involves growing strawberries in a multi-tier (2-tier, 3-tier) form within a single-span facility greenhouse (660㎡). The existing multi-tier cultivation had limitations due to insufficient light at the lower levels, resulting in poor growth of plants.
The ‘Strawberry LED Single-Span Multi-Tier Cultivation’ addressed these issues by applying LED lighting and a light-diffusing film (Tyvek).
Additionally, by saving space, it enables a harvest yield of over 168% compared to the same area, and when combined with a lifestyle-type smart farm, it allows low-cost environmental management through energy-saving heating and cooling facilities and internal humidity control devices.
The city expects this cultivation method to achieve productivity approximately 30-40% higher than strawberry production in advanced agricultural countries such as the Netherlands and Japan.
Furthermore, next year, the city plans to actively promote single-span smart multi-tier cultivation technology suited to local conditions.
Mayor Baek Seong-hyun stated, “The Strawberry LED Single-Span Multi-Tier Lifestyle Smart Farm will reduce production costs and enable the mass production of high-quality strawberries, making the industrialization of profitable agriculture possible.”

Meanwhile, as the number of new strawberry young entrepreneur smart farms has recently increased, the Nonsan Agricultural Technology Center plans to cultivate strawberry agriculture experts through the Strawberry Agriculture University, smart farm education, and advanced strawberry smart courses.
