Gong Yeong-min County Governor Checks Shipment Prices at Fresh Garlic Purchase Site

Need to Establish Proper Distribution Structure Centered on Nonghyup

Gong Yeong-min, the governor of Jeonnam, continues his active communication efforts by listening to voices from the field, following his visits last month to the onion harvest site in Geumsan-myeon and garlic damage farms in Gwaryeok-myeon. This time, he visited the garlic distribution site.

With garlic harvesting in full swing in Goheung-gun, the main garlic producing area, Governor Gong visited the purchasing sites of Pungyang Nonghyup and Nokdong Nonghyup on the 16th to assess the harvesting trends and listen to the difficulties faced by farmers.

At this event, farmers, middlemen, and Nonghyup officials who came to check the purchase price and quantity on the first day of purchasing gathered at the site, showing great interest in this year’s garlic purchasing.

In Goheung-gun, the cultivation area decreased by 11% compared to last year due to the aging of producing farmers, and this year, the nationwide secondary growth (beolmaneul) damage is severe, so production is expected to decrease significantly compared to the average year.

Accordingly, the county plans to complete damage surveys by the 20th and promptly request national government support, as the government has recognized the agricultural disaster caused by low-temperature damage to garlic, in order to minimize the damage to farmers.

Governor Gong, who visited the purchasing site, said to Nonghyup officials, “The more difficult it is for farmers due to abnormal weather like this year, the more I hope Nonghyup will take the lead in diversifying sales channels and establishing a proper distribution structure.”

Meanwhile, Goheung-gun supports garlic drying facilities and market maintenance at Nokdong Nonghyup and Pungyang Nonghyup to build a new garlic distribution system, supplies more than 300 small low-temperature storage units annually to farms to adjust shipment timing, and supports seasonal workers and the operation of rural manpower centers as a stable labor supply plan during the harvest season.
