Cheonan 'Haneulgreen Melon' Full-Scale Shipment Begins
From May to June, 110 Farms Expected to Ship Over 1,550 Tons from 57ha
The representative specialty crop of Cheonan City, Chungnam, the ‘Haneul Green Melon,’ has entered its full harvesting season.
According to Cheonan City on the 13th, the melon grown in a heated greenhouse by Mr. Ilpyeong Lee (73), a member of the Cheonan Melon Rural Leaders Association in Susin-myeon, was first harvested in early February. This marks a shipment start about 20 days earlier than the usual unheated cultivation.
Mr. Lee, who began the first harvest, divided the planting period into four phases across 53 greenhouse units (3.4 hectares), enabling melon harvesting from early May through late July.
In particular, a ‘portable non-destructive Brix meter’ is used to selectively harvest only melons with a sugar content of 16 Brix or higher, establishing a system that ships only high-quality melons.
The Susin melons distributed under the ‘Haneul Green Cheonan Melon’ brand are characterized by soft flesh, high sugar content, and rich aroma, using the Munet variety called Home Run Star, cultivated with over 40 years of accumulated farming technology.
The city expects full-scale shipments to take place from late May to late June, with this year’s cultivation scale estimated at 110 farms over 57 hectares, producing approximately 1,550 tons.
