The Nation's First Opened Marine Healing Center Gains Popularity for Mind and Body Therapy Using Marine Resources

Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do held a plaque ceremony on the 10th after the Wando Marine Healing Center was selected as a ‘2024 Excellent Wellness Tourism Destination’ by the Korea Tourism Organization.

According to the county on the 13th, since 2017, the Korea Tourism Organization has been selecting excellent wellness tourism destinations and facilities to attract foreign tourists and revitalize local tourism.

This year, 13 places including the Wando Marine Healing Center were selected as ‘New Excellent Wellness Tourism Destinations,’ with Wando being the only location from Jeollanam-do to be listed.

Accordingly, the county attended the ‘Excellent Wellness Tourism Destination Selection Commemorative Event’ held at Sayuwon in Daegu Metropolitan City on the 24th of last month as the representative of Jeollanam-do, where the plaque was awarded and discussions on revitalizing the wellness tourism industry took place.

The selection of excellent wellness tourism destinations was made through written and on-site evaluations by a panel of experts from academia and industry, based on criteria such as the appropriateness of wellness content, efforts to attract foreign tourists, and future development potential.

The Wando Marine Healing Center, selected as a ‘New Excellent Wellness Tourism Destination’ this year, is the first marine healing facility in Korea where people can engage in marine healing?a health promotion activity that heals the body and mind?by utilizing marine resources such as a clean marine environment, marine climate, seawater, mud, and seaweed.

It has a total of 16 therapy rooms and opened in November last year, providing specialized marine healing services unique to Wando. As of the 12th, over 23,000 people have visited, making it a hot spot for wellness tourism and healing.

Places selected as excellent wellness tourism destinations receive support from the Korea Tourism Organization for domestic and international promotion, tourism commercialization, customized individual consulting and capacity building education, and opportunities to participate in national wellness tourism events.

County Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “We are pleased that the Marine Healing Center has been recognized as a wellness tourism destination representing our country,” and added, “We will continue to develop unique tourism products linked to the Marine Healing Center, a hub facility for wellness, and strengthen the foundation for wellness tourism to actively attract domestic and foreign tourists.”

Meanwhile, the Wando Marine Healing Center was also selected as the ‘2024 Jeonnam Representative Wellness Tourism Destination’ last month, hosted by the Jeonnam Tourism Foundation.
