Sinan-gun, Purple Island Nationwide Largest Scale of Purple Fragrance
Lavender Festival Featuring 20 Million Blooms Held
Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, will host the nation's largest French lavender flower festival, featuring 20 million purple flowers, on Anjwa Purple Island, known as the queen of the seasons in May.
According to the county on the 11th, Purple Island became a place that nearly every Korean citizen has either visited or heard of, attracting about 400,000 visitors annually since being selected as the Best Tourism Village by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 2021.
It has already gained a reputation as a must-visit spot for anyone who loves the color purple. It has become a trend for visitors from all over the country to wear matching purple outfits when visiting Purple Island.
Since the declaration of Purple Island on August 13, 2021, the cumulative number of visitors has reached 1 million. The lavender festival will be held for 10 days from the 17th to the 26th.
At the opening ceremony on the 17th, a unique purple clothing contest will be held, and winners and participants will be awarded Shinan-gun’s specialty, sea salt.

County Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “Starting with lavender in May, Purple Island in Shinan-gun will be an island where purple flowers never cease throughout the year, including willow-leaved loosestrife in June and aster in September. We hope that all domestic and international visitors to Purple Island will wear purple clothes together and take home happiness as a bonus.”
