Apple Developing 'AI Chip' to Showcase AI Features This Fall
AI Feature Enhancement 'iOS 18' Scheduled for Release
Stock Price Jumps Double Digits in One Month
Apple, which is developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chips for data centers, is reportedly planning to showcase some AI features this fall.
On the 9th (local time), Bloomberg reported that Apple is designing its advanced AI chips to be installed in cloud computing servers to handle cutting-edge AI tasks for its devices. This is part of Apple's plan to significantly enhance AI capabilities with the release of iOS 18 this fall.
Apple has had a plan (internal codename ACDC) to process related tasks in the cloud using its own AI chips for the past three years. With the intensifying competition in generative AI development from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, the company is said to have accelerated its development pace.
Apple's first AI server chip is expected to be the M2 Ultra, which is installed in the Mac Pro and Mac Studio. However, Bloomberg added on the 8th that Apple is reviewing future versions based on its latest in-house developed chip, the M4 chip, which has been installed in the top-tier iPad Pro model.
Bloomberg noted that this cloud-based approach may be necessary for complex tasks such as generating images, summarizing long news articles, and composing lengthy emails.
Apple also considers enabling AI functions to be processed directly on its devices as an important part of its AI strategy. Simple AI features like summarizing text messages are expected to be handled directly on iPhones, iPads, and Macs without going through data centers.
Having been labeled as a "latecomer to AI" in the market, Apple is believed to be strengthening its AI strategy by operating AI functions either by receiving information from data centers or running them natively on its devices.
Through this, Apple is confident it will gain an advantage in the AI competition against other companies. Unlike other big tech firms such as Google and Amazon, Apple has a comprehensive portfolio that includes hardware like smartphones and laptops.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated last week, "Apple's unique combination of perfect hardware, software, and service integration gives us an advantage to differentiate ourselves in the new (AI) era."
Additionally, Apple is discussing with OpenAI and Google how to integrate other generative AI products like ChatGPT and Gemini with its devices. According to well-informed sources, Apple is reportedly offering various options to generative AI providers as compensation, increasing the likelihood of related partnerships.
