Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) announced that it has started early operation of 140 "Heatwave Shelter Shade Tents" to protect residents from strong spring ultraviolet rays and the early arrival of heat.
This is more than a month ahead of the official heatwave countermeasure period (May 20 to September 30), a measure taken to minimize inconvenience to residents and proactively respond to the heatwave, considering this year's unusual high-temperature weather conditions.
The district completed thorough pre-inspections, including confirming the normal operation of the automatic open/close devices of smart shade tents and checking for damage to parasol shade tents, and from this month began operating a total of 140 heatwave shade tents in the district, including 73 smart-type and 67 parasol-type tents.
Additionally, since 2013, the district has been the first in the nation to introduce the shade tent project, installing and operating shade tents around crosswalks and traffic islands with high pedestrian traffic every year, providing residents with shelters to escape the heat.
This year, the district plans to actively reflect residents' opinions gathered through demand surveys by neighborhood and replace the existing old parasols with smart shade tents.
The smart shade tents incorporate multifunctional systems combining Internet of Things and solar power technology, automatically operating according to surrounding environmental factors such as temperature, wind, and sunlight, enabling quick responses to sudden weather changes and receiving great feedback from residents.
Going forward, the district will also ensure perfect safety management by subscribing to liability insurance for public facilities to prepare for resident safety accidents caused by the shade tents and having management staff regularly inspect for malfunctions and normal operation.
