Meeting of Defeated Candidates Urges Reflection of Public Sentiment in Leadership System Changes and Party Leader Election
"Request for Innovation at the Level of Reestablishment"
Former out-of-parliament organizational chairpersons of the People Power Party who lost in the 22nd general election have called for changes to the party leadership system and the method of electing the party leader.
On the morning of the 22nd, 160 out-of-parliament organizational chairpersons delivered a request letter for party innovation to Acting Party Leader Yoon Jae-ok and Acting Secretary-General Bae Jun-young, asking for the launch of an innovative emergency committee and for 50% of the party leader election to reflect public opinion polls.
The current method of electing the party leader was revised before the last party convention, stipulating that the leader is elected solely by 100% party member votes. This is interpreted as a call to reflect public sentiment in the party leader election as well. They stated, "Out-of-parliament organizational chairpersons humbly accept the public's reprimand," adding, "We urgently request innovation at the level of re-founding the party with a sincere reflection and reform, as there is no future without it."
They further said, "We hope the party will transform into a policy-oriented party prioritizing people’s livelihoods, a competent party that immediately reflects public sentiment, and an inclusive party that embraces diverse voices," and added, "Since the requests from out-of-parliament regional chairpersons come from their experience with public sentiment in their regions, we ask to exclude opinions of regional rivalry or power struggles and to show a spirit of putting the party before personal interests."
