Korea Zinc Invests 670 Billion KRW in Australian Wind Power Plant... Supplies Electricity to Sunmetal
Scheduled for Full Commercial Operation in 2025
Korea Zinc is investing 753 million Australian dollars (approximately 670 billion KRW) in an Australian wind power plant. Thirty percent of the electricity produced by this wind power plant will be supplied to Korea Zinc's Australian zinc smelter, Sun Metal (SMC).
Korea Zinc announced on the 21st, "Our Australian subsidiary Arc Energy has made a final investment decision on a 30% stake in the MacIntyre Wind Farm, which is under construction in Queensland, Australia, through its affiliate Arc Energy MacIntyre."
The MacIntyre Wind Farm, which will have 162 wind turbines installed, is expected to become the largest wind power plant not only in Australia but also in the world. Construction began in March 2022, and the progress rate has now exceeded 80%. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in August next year.
This wind power plant was developed and constructed by Acciona Energy, a subsidiary of the Spanish renewable energy company Acciona. It is located southwest of Warwick City in Queensland, Australia.

With this final investment decision, Arc Energy will secure 30% of the 923.4 MW generation capacity of the MacIntyre Wind Farm, and 30% of the electricity produced here will be supplied to Sun Metal, Korea Zinc's Australian subsidiary. This accounts for 21.8% of Sun Metal's annual electricity consumption (based on the expected electricity usage in 2024).
This is the first case of electricity produced by Korea Zinc's renewable energy power plants being sold externally and is expected to serve as a foundation for expanding renewable energy power projects in Australia. It will also provide a significant boost to Sun Metal's achievement of RE100 by 2040.

Arc Energy was established in Australia in 2021 to promote Korea Zinc's renewable energy and green hydrogen businesses. It is developing approximately 8 GW of renewable energy assets through a large-scale renewable energy asset portfolio across three Australian states. In February, it obtained development approval for a wind power project in New South Wales, Australia, for the Bowmans Power Plant. This project involves installing 54 wind turbines with a generation capacity of 335 MW.
