A public opinion poll revealed that President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating has dropped to its lowest level since taking office.
According to the regular poll conducted by Gallup from the 16th to the 18th (interviews were conducted via randomly selected mobile phone numbers of 1,000 adults nationwide aged 18 and over), President Yoon's approval rating was 23%, down 11 percentage points from the previous survey (4th week of March).
The previous lowest approval rating was 24%, recorded in the 1st week of August 2022 and the 5th week of September 2022. Although President Yoon's approval rating once reached 53% (1st and 2nd weeks of June 2022), it has since shown a downward trend, fluctuating between the mid-30% range and the high 20% range. Negative evaluations rose by 10 percentage points to 68%, the highest since his inauguration.
Gallup conducts weekly regular surveys, but did not conduct any in the past two weeks due to the ban on publishing election polls during the general election period. This survey is the first regular poll conducted after the general election. With concerns over rising inflation and setbacks such as difficulties in appointing the Prime Minister and Chief of Staff, there is keen interest in whether President Yoon's approval rating will continue to decline.
In terms of party support, the Democratic Party of Korea rose 2 percentage points to 31%, the People Power Party fell 7 percentage points to 30%, and the Innovation Party increased 2 percentage points to 14%.
In the survey regarding next-generation political leaders for the next presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, ranked first. Former People Power Party Emergency Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon showed a declining trend, while Innovation Party leader Jo Guk showed an upward trend. Lee recorded 24%, up 1 percentage point from the 1st week of March. Han, the highest within the ruling party, dropped 9 percentage points to 15%. Jo rose 4 percentage points to 7%.
Regarding the medical school quota, 47% of respondents said that a mediation plan adjusting the scale and timing should be prepared. This was followed by 41% who said the government plan should be implemented as is, and 7% who said the increase should be withdrawn.
