Gwanak-gu Welcomes New Spring by Shedding Old Dirt through Resident-Led Community Cleaning
Third Thursday of Every Month Marks the 3rd Year of 'Resident Autonomous Cleaning Day'... Over 11,300 Residents Clean More Than 800km... Full Effort to Spread Voluntary Cleaning Culture... Monthly Focused Cleaning Themes Set This Year to Enhance Efficiency
Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) has launched the '2024 Resident Autonomous Cleaning' campaign, starting with a spring cleaning.
The district has designated the third Thursday of every month as the 'Resident Autonomous Cleaning Day,' where all residents clean together, and for three years now, it has been striving to spread a culture of voluntary and continuous neighborhood cleanliness.
District Mayor Park Jun-hee, believing that "cleaning administration cannot succeed without residents' participation," has personally cleaned every neighborhood over the past two years, encouraging residents to actively participate in voluntary cleaning. As a result, the district has cleaned over approximately 800 km of local areas with about 11,300 residents so far.
At this event marking the start of the Resident Autonomous Cleaning, neighborhood civic groups, Cheongjeong Salteo Ikgeumi (Clean Living Leaders), residents, and Gwanak-gu officials worked together to ▲ clean accumulated neighborhood trash ▲ promote major cleaning policies ▲ hold a residents' opinion listening meeting.
In particular, from April to November this year, the district will conduct major cleaning campaigns with monthly themes such as ▲ 'Cleaning around rainwater inlets' for safety during the rainy season ▲ holiday cleaning ▲ cleaning around green belts during the fallen leaves season.
Additionally, the district is deploying high-pressure water trucks and vacuum street cleaning vehicles to clean major arterial roads in the area, making a full effort to protect residents' health and safety from the fine dust and yellow dust that are prevalent in spring.
Meanwhile, the district is working hard to create a clean living environment in Gwanak by ▲ distributing 'recycling-only bags' designed to separate recyclables by item, the first of its kind in Seoul ▲ operating 'resource circulation clubs' to promote the culture of separating transparent PET bottles and waste vinyl ▲ operating 'illegal dumping security guards' to prevent and crack down on illegal dumping.

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, "I am grateful that many residents took their precious time to participate in this year's first spring cleaning," and added, "We will continue to do our best until the culture of residents voluntarily 'sweeping their own homes and stores' is firmly established."
