Italy boasts numerous cities catering to diverse tastes, including the ancient charm of Rome, the Renaissance beauty of Florence, the coastal allure of Naples, and the international atmosphere of Milan. For digital nomads seeking a new residence, the options are endless. There is sunny summer weather, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and plenty of cultural heritage sites and activities to enjoy for months or even years.
Additionally, all of this is offered at a relatively affordable price due to the low cost of living. A path has opened to work and heal in Italy, one of the best vacation destinations in the world. Until now, there was no legal way for digital nomads (digital nomads or remote workers) to work long-term in Italy. However, a new visa for remote workers was signed into Italian law on March 28, 2022, and the law has been in effect since April 4, according to foreign media such as Euronews.
The Italian government allows third-country foreigners to reside in Italy and perform highly skilled work as freelancers or for employers outside Italy for up to 12 months. Applicants must prove health insurance coverage for the stay, proof of accommodation, and a minimum income (annual salary of over 40 million KRW). They must also submit documents signed by their employer proving no criminal record related to illegal immigration or illegal employment in the past five years.

Once the visa is issued, the holder can travel to Italy and must apply for a residence permit within 8 working days after entry. Workers will be issued a permit valid for one year, which can be renewed annually if conditions and requirements are met. If the employer or contractor has been convicted in the past five years, the visa may be denied or canceled. If the worker or company fails to comply with tax and contribution obligations, the already issued residence permit may be revoked.
