Agreement Signed for Transfer and Donation of Literature Hall Materials to University
National Pukyong University (President Jang Young-su) and the Lee Joo-hong Literary Foundation (Chairman Ryu Cheong-ro) have signed an agreement for the transfer of materials related to the Lee Joo-hong Literary Museum (Busan Oncheon-dong).
At the signing ceremony held on the 5th in the president’s office on the 3rd floor of the National Pukyong University headquarters, President Jang Young-su and Chairman Ryu Cheong-ro agreed to cooperate in widely promoting the life and literary world of Hyangpa (向破) Lee Joo-hong (1906?1987), as well as preserving and exhibiting literary materials and works.
National Pukyong University and the Lee Joo-hong Literary Foundation will proceed with the transfer and exhibition of over 10,000 books, calligraphy and paintings, personal belongings, letters sent by writers nationwide, and other materials related to Lee Joo-hong displayed at the Lee Joo-hong Literary Museum, along with promoting the donation of properties owned by the museum.
Hyangpa Lee Joo-hong is regarded as a leading figure in modern Korean children’s literature. In 1928, he published his first fairy tale, “The Dance of the Baeam Chick,” in Shin Sonyeon, and in 1929, he debuted with his first short story, “Poverty and Marriage,” in the Chosun Ilbo.
He is recognized for his prolific contributions across various literary genres including poetry, novels, essays, plays, children’s poetry, fairy tales, and translations, leaving a significant legacy in Korean literary history. He received honors such as the Republic of Korea Cultural Medal, the Republic of Korea Academy of Arts Award, and the Busan City Cultural Award.
From 1949, Lee Joo-hong served as a professor at Busan Fisheries University, the predecessor of National Pukyong University, nurturing students for nearly 40 years until 1987. National Pukyong University named the comprehensive lecture hall where he taught the “Hyangpa Hall” and erected the “Hyangpa Monument” in front of the building to commemorate his literary achievements.
The alley along the northern fence of National Pukyong University’s Daeyeon Campus has been developed into the “Hyangpa Literary Street,” where 60 of Lee Joo-hong’s works are framed and exhibited.
