Gwangju City Launches '2024 Climate Farmer School' Program
Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Ki-jung) announced on the 7th that it started operating the ‘2024 Climate Farmer School’ program at the Urban Garden on the 6th.
On that day, 12 citizen communities including the Gwangju Seo-gu Family Center and about 80 participants took part in the program, receiving education on the theme of ‘What crops to plant and when?’ and carrying out farming tasks such as spreading compost.
The Climate Farmer School has been operated annually from April to December since 2022 with 20 sessions, aiming to create public community gardens and cultivate urban farmers responding to the climate crisis.
Communities are required to participate in the program held every other Saturday each month at the Urban Garden, where they receive theoretical education and practical training and engage in public activities to maintain the garden.
The Urban Garden is an urban agricultural space with various functions such as experience, education, and relaxation, established in Yudeok-dong in 2022 to spread urban agricultural culture. It consists of garden plots, community gardens, and native seed resources.
Gwangju City is implementing various projects to revitalize and spread the value of urban agriculture, including ▲Climate Farmer School ▲Urban Farmer Harmony Festival ▲Agricultural Humanities Citizen Lectures ▲Visiting Urban Agriculture Consulting. In addition, together with autonomous districts, it plans to promote various projects such as ▲operating 10 public urban agriculture farms ▲creating children’s gardens ▲supporting box gardens.

Nam Taek-song, Director of the Agricultural and Animal Policy Division, said, “The Climate Farmer School is a program where civic groups form a cooperative to receive education and practice on various topics in the garden,” adding, “We hope participants of the Climate Farmer School will promote the value of urban agriculture and become a bridge connecting the city and the countryside.”
