Wando-gun Completes Basic Plan for Smooth Progress of National Subtropical Arboretum Development
Basic Plan Service Completed Over 4 Months Early, Project Progressing Rapidly
Distinctive Facilities Including Lake Garden Center, Monorail, and Observatory Established
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) announced on the 2nd that the basic plan service for the National Subtropical Arboretum development project was completed about four months ahead of schedule.
The National Subtropical Arboretum development project is a large-scale national project investing 147.5 billion KRW of national funds into the site of Wando Arboretum (381 hectares), the largest subtropical forest in Korea, currently operated as a provincial arboretum.
During the project promotion process, the basic plan is a crucial stage that involves concretely establishing the overall plan including project promotion policies, concepts, ideas, and layout, which is directly linked to the success or failure of the project.
Wando-gun expects the National Subtropical Arboretum development project to bring significant advantages to the region by linking it with the marine healing industry, a key project of the county, and has carefully discussed detailed matters from the start of the service and proposed them to the Korea Forest Service.
Based on these discussions, the completeness of the basic plan was enhanced. On the 5th of last month, the Korea Forest Service held the ‘Completion Report Meeting for the Basic Plan of the National Subtropical Arboretum.’
The basic plan includes fulfilling the role of the arboretum in responding to global warming while establishing visitor spaces such as the ‘Lake Garden Center,’ ‘Monorail,’ ‘Observation Deck’ with views of the subtropical forest and the Dadohae (Sea of Many Islands), ‘Treetop Deck Road,’ and ‘Exhibition Greenhouse,’ aiming to differentiate it from other arboretums.
The Korea Forest Service, Jeollanam-do, and Wando-gun plan to immediately start the basic design and proceed with the project at a rapid pace.
Kim Yong-kwan, Director of the Forest Protection Bureau at the Korea Forest Service, said, “The National Subtropical Arboretum should contribute not only to the functions of an arboretum but also to various fields such as the tourism industry,” adding, “We will share the development direction with experts and local stakeholders to ensure that the National Subtropical Arboretum becomes a premium arboretum.”
Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated, “Looking at the basic plan, I could see the great care and effort put in by the staff,” and added, “Since the National Subtropical Arboretum development project plays a major role in our county’s leap to become a wellness tourism hub, we will devote even greater efforts to the project’s promotion.”
Meanwhile, it is expected that upon the arboretum’s opening, there will be several hundred thousand visitors annually, generating over 1 trillion KRW in production added value and creating more than 10,000 jobs, resulting in significant ripple effects in the region.
