District Mayor Oh Seung-rok Participates in Campaign to Reduce Plastic Use and Promote Ethical Consumption
Targeting 40% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2030, Steady Progress Toward Net Zero by 2050
Next Challenge Nominees: District Mayors Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk and Lee Soon-hee of Gangbuk
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will participate in the 'ByeBye Plastic (BBP) Challenge' to encourage residents to join efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
The 'ByeBye Plastic Challenge' is a campaign that urges reducing plastic use in daily life and practicing responsible consumption. Mayor Oh Seung-rok was nominated by Lee Kang-deok, mayor of Pohang City, Gyeongbuk, with which Nowon-gu has a sisterhood relationship, leading to participation in this campaign. To encourage active community involvement, he nominated Lee Seung-ro, mayor of Seongbuk-gu, and Lee Soon-hee, mayor of Gangbuk-gu, as the next participants.
The district is making multifaceted efforts to achieve a carbon-neutral city, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050. Through participation in the BBP Challenge and other various methods, it plans to promote ways to practice carbon neutrality in daily life.
First, to reduce plastic use in everyday life, a self-service return machine for reusable cups has been installed at the cafe inside the government office, and the use of reusable cups and tumblers is being actively practiced.
Additionally, the 'Nowon Citizens' 10 Promises for Practice' campaign has been underway since January this year. This was selected by residents participating on Environment Day last June to raise awareness of environmental protection and to spread an eco-friendly culture in daily life, with ongoing events supporting this effort.
For sustainable development, the organization has been restructured and a dedicated body established. In January last year, the Carbon Neutral Promotion Team was created for the first time among local governments nationwide to conduct research and develop policies for sustainable development.
Since its establishment in 2017 as the first environmental foundation among Seoul's autonomous districts, the Nowon Environmental Foundation utilizes the Nowon Eco Center and Jungnangcheon Environmental Center under its umbrella to develop and operate environmental education programs, support local environmental activists, and work on building networks with environmental organizations and related institutions.
