The agreement ceremony took place that morning at Yangcheon-gu Office, where Mayor Lee Gi-jae of Yangcheon-gu and Mayor Kim Byung-soo of Gimpo City met and signed the agreement. The content focuses on jointly pursuing transportation welfare for Yangcheon-gu residents and Gimpo citizens by improving the insufficient public transportation infrastructure.
The main agreement items include ▲ cooperation to reflect the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan and the National Railway Network Plan ▲ joint implementation of a preliminary feasibility study, among others. The preliminary feasibility study, which will be the first step for the extension project, will be immediately promoted under the supervision of Gimpo City, with costs jointly borne by each local government.
The district stated, “Through the study, we will focus on securing project feasibility and lay the foundation so that it can be reflected in the establishment of statutory plans such as the Urban Railway Network Plan and the Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan in the future.”
This business agreement was made under the shared goal of “expanding railway transportation” for regional development, forming a strong consensus on the urgency and necessity of the extension project. The section of Nambusunhwan-ro in Sinwol-dong, Yangcheon-gu is the only area in Seoul without railway transportation, and the poor residential environment continues due to aggravated aircraft noise damage.
Accordingly, the district is promoting the “establishment of Sinwol Sageori Station and relocation of Sinjeong Depot” by extending the line about 2.4 km from the terminus Kkachisan Station as a core task to resolve the public transportation blind spot in Sinwol-dong. In particular, relocating Sinjeong Depot and developing the site with high-density development is expected to enhance the project feasibility.
Gimpo City is also in urgent need of transportation measures due to the severe congestion of the current Gimpo Gold Line. If the Seoul Line 2 Sinjeong Branch is extended to Gimpo, it will be possible to alleviate congestion on the Gimpo Gold Line and strengthen Yangcheon-gu’s transportation infrastructure.
On the same morning, the two local government heads visited Seoul City Hall to deliver the business agreement details to Mayor Oh and requested that the “Seoul Line 2 Sinjeong Branch Gimpo Extension” project be included in the “Urban Railway Network Construction Plan” and also proposed to the “Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan.”
Yangcheon-gu stated, “Mayor Oh responded that if it benefits the citizens of Gimpo and Yangcheon-gu, Seoul City will actively review and support it.”
