President Yoon's Opening Remarks at the Cabinet Meeting
"The International Community Highly Appreciates South Korea's Level of Democracy"
President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on the 20th regarding the 'Technology, Elections, and Fake News' session of the Democracy Summit plenary meeting that he is presiding over, "It will serve as an opportunity to protect elections and the democratic political system, which are the core of democracy, from fake news and false propaganda, and to instill confidence in our free democracy among the youth."
In his opening remarks at the Cabinet meeting held at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the same day, President Yoon said, "Today, advanced digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data have become commonplace, bringing many benefits to daily life, but side effects such as fake news and false propaganda are also spreading widely."
Korea has been hosting the 3rd Democracy Summit in Seoul from the day before until the 20th, featuring ministerial-level meetings, civil society events, and virtual summits. This is the first time the Democracy Summit, first held by U.S. President Joe Biden in 2021, is being held outside the United States.
President Yoon introduced the Democracy Summit, themed "Democracy for Future Generations," as a place where heads of state and ministers from various countries exchange opinions and gather wisdom on the challenges democracy faces today.
Regarding the background of Korea hosting this Democracy Summit, he evaluated, "Following the co-hosting of the 2nd Summit last year, Korea hosting the 3rd Summit reflects the international community's high regard for the level of democracy in our country."
