Southeast Asia Air Routes to Reduce Congestion and Delays
Official Membership in Southeast Asia Air Traffic Flow Management Cooperation (AMNAC) on the 15th
Expecting Expansion of Flow Management to 76.6% of International Flights
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 17th that South Korea officially joined the Southeast Asia Air Traffic Flow Management Cooperation (AMNAC) on the 15th.
Air traffic flow management is a method of adjusting aircraft departure and arrival times in advance during peak flight demand periods or hazardous weather conditions such as typhoons to ensure the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations.
Through this membership, the use of the most complex Southeast Asian air routes, which account for more than 48% of aircraft operations on South Korea's international routes, is expected to become more convenient and safer.
Until now, South Korea uniformly applied departure time intervals set by neighboring countries such as Japan and Taiwan for flights heading to Southeast Asia. As a result, airport waiting times for flights departing to Southeast Asia at the same time increased, frequently causing significant inconvenience to airlines and travelers.
With this AMNAC membership, a flow management method that directly coordinates optimized takeoff times for each flight to Southeast Asia among member countries will be applied, significantly reducing unnecessary ground waiting and airborne delays.
Since August last year, the Ministry has cooperated with Vietnamese aviation authorities to reduce the average ground delay for flights to Da Nang from 273 minutes (11 minutes per aircraft) to 78 minutes (3 minutes per aircraft), a reduction of over 70%. This has resulted in an economic effect of saving approximately 145 million KRW annually in aircraft fuel consumption.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expects that through this Southeast Asia cooperation membership, flow management can be expanded to cover more than 76.6% of international flights, an increase of 31.1%.
