Yangcheon-gu Removes Somang Pedestrian Overpass on Gukhoe-daero After 32 Years
March 19-20 Full Closure of 6 Lanes on Gukhoe-daero Due to Somangbo Pedestrian Overpass Demolition
Each Closure Lasts 5 Minutes: 6 Times Toward Yeouido, 5 Times Toward Incheon, Total 11 Full Closures
Traffic Information Provided via Banners and Traffic Broadcasts to Minimize User Inconvenience
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 17th that the Somang Pedestrian Overpass (Sinjeong 4-dong 881-1), installed in July 1992, will be demolished, and as a result, all six lanes of traffic on Gukhoe-daero will be fully restricted on the 19th and 20th to facilitate smooth construction work on Gukhoe-daero.
The traffic restriction zone is between Sinwol IC and Hongik Hospital in both directions. Currently, construction is underway for the Gukhoe-daero underpass and the upper park development (Phase 2) in this area. During the excavation work for the Gukhoe-daero underpass, the demolition of the Somang Pedestrian Overpass located within the project area will take place, necessitating road closures to lift the overpass.
The demolition work will be carried out over two days, the 19th and 20th, by the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Infrastructure Headquarters, the implementing agency for the Gukhoe-daero underpass and upper park project. For safety, the six lanes of Gukhoe-daero will be fully closed a total of 11 times in stages (6 times toward Yeouido, 5 times toward Incheon).
Each closure will last approximately 5 minutes. On the first day, the 19th, the lanes toward Yeouido will be closed twice and those toward Incheon once. On the second day, the 20th, the lanes toward Yeouido will be closed four times and those toward Incheon four times.
Due to expected traffic congestion caused by the demolition of the Somang Pedestrian Overpass on Gukhoe-daero, four banners and eight construction information boards have been installed near the overpass to minimize inconvenience to users. Additionally, information is being provided through road electronic signs and traffic broadcasts.
Meanwhile, prior to the demolition, a traffic light and crosswalk were installed near the pedestrian overpass on the 6th to ensure that residents do not experience inconvenience while crossing.
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, urged, “As the complete closure of lanes will occur during the two-day demolition of the Somang Pedestrian Overpass, residents planning to use the area around the site should check the restricted sections and times in advance.”
