Wando-gun Introduces 6 New Abalone Dishes Packed with Flavor and Nutrition
Various Menu Options Including Marine Healing Cypress Steamed Dish, Abalone Jeyuk, Abalone Rice Bowl, and Spicy Garlic Abalone
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, is introducing six new abalone dishes in collaboration with local restaurants located on Abalone Street, following the opening of the Marine Healing Center and an increase in spring tourists.
While familiar dishes such as abalone sashimi, porridge, and grilled abalone are always popular, the newly developed abalone dishes include △Abalone Jeyuk (restaurant name ? Susan Market No. 55) △Abalone Hwangtae Hangover Soup (Heungnam Restaurant) △Abalone Rice Bowl (Namgang Abalone) △Marine Healing Hinoki Steamed Dish (Wando Port) △Kkanpung Abalone & Sweet and Sour Abalone (Wando Hoe Town) △Yeonpotang (Dongseojigan). These dishes reflect dining trends with a variety of cooking methods.
Abalone Jeyuk combines spicy stir-fried pork with chewy abalone, offering great taste and texture, making it perfect as a meal or a side dish. Abalone Hwangtae Hangover Soup is a hearty restorative dish that adds abalone, known for boosting energy, to the hangover soup made with dried pollack, which is good for relieving hangovers.
Abalone Rice Bowl features abalone and various vegetables stir-fried in oyster sauce and seasoning, providing a familiar flavor. When paired with seaweed stem pickles developed by the chef, it makes a delicious meal.
The Marine Healing Hinoki Steamed Dish is prepared by steaming seasonal seafood such as abalone, octopus, and horned turban shell along with vegetables and beef in a hinoki cypress steamer, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine. The umami of the broth is exceptional. Prior reservation is required for the Marine Healing Hinoki Steamed Dish.
Kkanpung Abalone and Sweet and Sour Abalone were developed so that children and adults who do not prefer seafood can enjoy them deliciously. Sweet and Sour Abalone is coated in batter and fried, resulting in a crispy exterior with a sweet and sour sauce that makes it hard to stop eating. Yeonpotang, which contains plump octopus, offers a refreshing and spicy broth and is also a delicacy.
Wando abalone accounts for more than 70% of the national production. It grows in a clean sea area formed by macbanseok (lava stone) and chuseok (basalt), rich in vitamins, iron, calcium, and protein. It also contains a high amount of arginine, which has antioxidant effects and boosts immunity, earning it the nickname "Ginseng of the Sea."
An official from the county said, “Starting with the Cheongsando Slow Walking Festival on the 6th of next month, followed by the Jangbogo Seafood Festival and the Marine Healing Garden Festival, we have developed various menus to meet tourists’ demand for abalone dishes.” He added, “Each menu has its own charm, so we hope visitors enjoy delicious and healthy abalone dishes while experiencing Wando’s gourmet tourism.”
