The Democratic Party held the primary from the 11th to the 13th, with 50% of the votes coming from party members and 50% from the general public. Prior to this, preliminary candidates Kim Byungdo and Jeong Seungwook were cut off.
Kim Taesung, a retired army colonel and former division commander who played a key role as a peace and security strategist in candidate Lee Jae-myung’s presidential campaign, has emerged as a strong dark horse in Yeongam-Muan-Shinan. He is now competing against the incumbent Seo Samsuk, a veteran member of the National Assembly, by promoting differentiated policies and seizing key issues, drawing attention to whether this will continue the wave of reform.
Preliminary candidate Seo Samsuk is a two-term lawmaker who has served three times on the Budget and Accounts Committee over six years. Currently, he is the chair of the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Budget and Accounts and has played a significant role in ushering in the era of a 9 trillion won national budget for Jeonnam this year. He is now seeking a powerful third term.
