Gangdong-gu Establishes Comprehensive Plan for Safe and Walkable Pedestrian Environment in 2024
Improving Traffic Safety Facilities Considering Pedestrian Convenience and Enhancing Child Protection Zones
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced that it has established the "2024 Comprehensive Plan for Creating a Walkable and Safe Pedestrian Environment" and will work to create a safe pedestrian environment for vulnerable road users, including children.
This comprehensive plan includes projects that Gangdong-gu will promote to create a safe traffic environment for vulnerable road users, such as ▲expansion of school zones ▲children’s traffic safety map project ▲installation of speed enforcement cameras ▲installation of smart crosswalks ▲maintenance of traffic safety facilities in school zones ▲children’s pedestrian safety campaigns.
In particular, the district plans to focus on projects to prevent safety accidents for children and pedestrians, including ▲improvement of school zone routes ▲establishment and maintenance of pedestrian-priority roads.
Along with this, the district will continuously carry out traffic safety facility management projects that consider pedestrian convenience, such as ▲maintenance of traffic safety facilities ▲road surface marking maintenance ▲replacement of road name guide signs.
Last year, Gangdong-gu worked hard to ensure pedestrian safety for vulnerable road users by newly designating or expanding three school zones in the area, installing 13 speed enforcement cameras in school zones, creating 161 smart crosswalks equipped with ground traffic lights and voice guidance auxiliary devices, and installing diagonal crosswalks on school routes.
In addition, the district promoted 23 unit projects to create a pedestrian-friendly environment, including maintenance of 1,172 outdated or repair-needed traffic safety facilities and 20,740 meters of road surface markings.
