"Amateur Editing Mistakes..."... 'Manipulation Controversy' British Crown Princess Finally Apologizes
Kate Middleton, British Crown Princess, Photo Manipulation
Disappears for 2 Months After Surgery, Sparking 'Health Concerns'
Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was recently surrounded by rumors of health issues, admitted to photo manipulation and apologized just one day after releasing a family photo. Kensington Palace posted on official X (formerly Twitter) on the 11th (local time), saying, "Like many amateur photographers, I sometimes experiment with editing. I wanted to apologize for the confusion caused by the family photo we shared yesterday." The post was signed with the initial "C," representing the Duchess's name, Catherine.
Kensington Palace had posted a message and photo under the Duchess's name the previous day in celebration of Mother's Day. In the photo, the Duchess is seated in the center, with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis standing on either side. The Duchess has her arms around their waists. The eldest, Prince George, stands behind, wrapping his arms around the Duchess. The Duchess wrote, "Thank you for your warm concern and continued support over the past two months. Wishing everyone a happy Mother's Day." The post also included the explanation that the photo was taken by Prince William and was signed with the initial "C."
This photo was the first official release since the Duchess underwent abdominal surgery on January 16 and disappeared from public appearances for over two months. During this period, no photos of her leaving the hospital or convalescing were released, leading to rumors on social media that she was in critical condition. The specific illness has not been disclosed, and the royal family has denied any connection to cancer. The Duchess is expected to resume royal duties after Easter (March 31).
While the release of this photo seemed to put an end to the health rumors, it was later revealed to be manipulated, which only intensified the controversy. Shortly after the photo was released, suspicions arose including ▲ part of Princess Charlotte's sleeve appearing erased, and the skirt hemline misaligned ▲ the Duchess not wearing her wedding ring ▲ the leaves in the background appearing unusually green for winter.

Due to these suspicions, major news agencies subsequently withdrew the photo. The Associated Press stated, "We published the photo provided by Kensington Palace, but upon closer inspection, it appears the image was manipulated in a way that does not meet AP's photo standards at the original stage." AFP also announced, "It has been confirmed that the photo was later altered, and we will remove it from AFP's system." Getty Images, Reuters, and the UK's PA Media also canceled publication of the photo.
