Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) conducted a safety inspection of school routes near elementary schools in the area to mark the new semester.
Through this safety inspection, Seongdong-gu plans to thoroughly identify areas for improvement to create safer school routes and promote these efforts by strengthening cooperation with related organizations such as the police.
On the 8th, Mayor Jeong Wono of Seongdong-gu, along with officials from relevant departments, carried out a safety inspection of the school route near Gyeongil Elementary School in Seongsu-dong. The area near Gyeongil Elementary School is characterized by many narrow alleys, and with the recent increase in nearby construction, traffic volume has also risen, leading residents to express the need for proactive traffic safety measures.
Since 2020, Seongdong-gu has continuously worked to improve traffic safety in the child protection zone near Gyeongil Elementary School by installing Seongdong-type smart crosswalks and yellow carpet sign blocks, as well as replacing old safety fences.
In particular, since the end of last year, the district has visited construction sites near schools to request cooperation for children's commuting safety, and discussions to secure school route safety have been ongoing at regular security council meetings with the Seongdong Police Station.
During the safety inspection conducted through this process, officials from related organizations such as the Seongdong Police Station and Gyeongil Elementary School also participated to jointly identify areas for improvement on site and discuss specific improvement plans.
Accordingly, Seongdong-gu plans to improve the environment around the crosswalk in front of the main gate, install additional traffic safety facilities, and promptly maintain old road markings.
Additionally, a supplementary sign indicating "Left turn allowed on green light" will be installed on the unprotected left turn sign at the intersection in front of the main gate, and more traffic safety guards will be deployed along school routes to ensure children can commute more safely to and from school.
Furthermore, Seongdong-gu will conduct focused inspections of child protection zones around seven elementary schools in the district where sidewalks and roads are not separated or where many residents have raised traffic safety concerns. The district will immediately maintain areas it can manage directly and actively consult with related organizations on matters requiring cooperation.
