49 Performers of Developmental Disability Orchestra in Action
The orchestra for people with developmental disabilities, ‘Seocho Hanuri Orchestra,’ will present a high-quality performance together with KBS ‘Gugak Orchestra.’
Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will hold the 3rd regular concert of the Seocho Hanuri Orchestra titled ‘Meeting of Classical and Gugak, Dreaming of Harmony with the World’ at 7 p.m. on the 9th of next month at the National Theater’s Haeoreum Theater.
Founded in 2017, the ‘Seocho Hanuri Orchestra’ is a professional orchestra composed entirely of members with developmental disabilities. All members are professional musicians who receive salaries for their performances, and to date, a total of 49 musicians with developmental disabilities have participated, establishing a foundation for economic independence.
They have held over 100 concerts so far and have been recognized for their outstanding skills, winning awards such as the Best Award and Instructor Award in the Western Instrument category at the 10th ‘National Disabled Youth Arts Festival’ (2017), the Grand Prize at the 2nd ‘National Developmental Disabilities Music Festival’ (2018), and the Grand Prize at the Wonis Arts Festival (2023).
This year’s 3rd regular concert will be hosted by announcer Hwang Soo-kyung and conducted by music director Jeon So-young, featuring a diverse program ranging from classical music to movie OSTs.
In particular, this concert is prepared as the first collaboration between a developmental disabilities orchestra and KBS ‘Gugak Orchestra.’ The magnificent orchestra music combined with lively and vibrant Gugak is expected to create a beautiful harmony that will offer the audience a unique emotional experience.
A representative of the Seocho Hanuri Orchestra said, “We planned this concert with the hope that just as classical and Gugak harmonize to play beautiful melodies, people with disabilities will live in harmony with the world without prejudice.”
Residents who wish to attend can make reservations by calling the Seocho-gu Hanuri Information and Culture Center starting from the 11th. Admission is free.
