Gwanak-gu Allocates 8 Billion KRW for Education Expenses in 2024
2024 Education Expense Budget Set at 8 Billion Won, First Phase Budget Support of 5.28 Billion Won
Focus on Creating a Safe Educational Environment Including Safe Commute Support
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is actively working to create a safe educational environment by allocating 8 billion KRW for education expenses in 2024.
Education expenses are subsidies that support school education and facility improvements. The district has steadily increased the education budget from 1.5 billion KRW in 2017 to 8 billion KRW in 2024.
As a result of continuously expanding various education expense projects to promote universal education without discrimination and to revitalize public education, the four-year university entrance rate of graduates from general high schools in the region increased significantly from 40% in 2017 to 45.6% in 2023.
Last year, with the growing importance of future education in the digital transformation era, the district focused on projects to bridge the digital education gap. Operating expenses such as professional instructor fees and teaching materials for ‘AI-based 4th Industrial Revolution future education’ were supported at 26 schools, and facility construction costs such as information device installation and classroom remodeling were provided to 3 schools.
This enabled experiential classes using AI teaching aids in a comfortable digital environment, rather than simple textbook and computer-based lessons.
Additionally, to encourage the creation of ‘school-specialized spaces,’ up to 100 million KRW was provided to 9 schools selected through a contest for spaces such as study caf?-style discussion learning areas and multipurpose creative libraries.
Moreover, by utilizing unused outdoor spaces, specialized community spaces accessible to all local residents were created, supporting a total of 461 projects at 88 schools with 8 billion KRW last year.
This year, new and expanded projects for creating a safe educational environment will be operated. After receiving applications for school-specific projects and reviewing them at the Education Expense Subsidy Deliberation Committee on February 5, it was decided to prioritize support for 470 projects at 88 kindergartens, elementary, middle, high, special, and various schools in the region with a total of 5.28 billion KRW.
First, reflecting requests from school sites, new projects such as ‘Career Exploration Education’ for middle school students tailored to their needs and ‘Safety Support for Commuting and On/Off Campus’ to prevent safety accidents for elementary students will be introduced, and the ‘Educational Welfare Project’ in cooperation with the education office for educationally vulnerable students will be expanded.
In response to social issues related to schools, new projects such as ‘Special Education Support’ to enhance the quality of inclusive education and ‘Sports Facility Opening Support’ to ensure safe educational activities will be launched, and the ‘Suicide and School Violence Prevention and Psychological Emotional Support’ project will be expanded. These efforts are expected to greatly contribute to creating safe and happy schools where schools and local residents coexist harmoniously.
