The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 4th the appointment of Lee as Ambassador to Australia along with other diplomatic posts.
He served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration at the Army's 1st Corps, Deputy Director of Policy Planning at the Ministry of National Defense, and in 2013, he was appointed Commander of the Army's 2nd Division (Major General), Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's New Allied Defense Promotion Group (Major General), and later served as Commander of the 7th Corps (Lieutenant General) in 2016, and Deputy Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2017 to 2018 before retiring as Lieutenant General.
He was then appointed as the first Minister of National Defense of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration in May 2022.
He resigned in September last year after facing impeachment pressure from opposition parties amid allegations of investigation interference related to the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae Mo.
The government's appointment of Lee as Ambassador to Australia is interpreted as an effort to strengthen cooperation with Australia in defense and defense industry sectors.
Australia is the only country, aside from the United States, with which South Korea operates a ministerial-level foreign and defense '2+2' meeting.
On the same day, Kim Pan-gyu, former Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as Ambassador to Nigeria.
