Ulsan City Gas Heat Pump Emission Reduction Device Attachment Support Project
Received by Environmental Department of District/County Office
Ulsan City announced that it will promote the ‘2024 Gas Heat Pump Emission Reduction Device Attachment Support Project’ together with five districts and counties.
This project aims to alleviate the economic burden on operators by supporting the cost of attaching emission reduction devices to gas heat pumps and to reduce the emission of air pollutants through the installation of these devices. The project budget is 2.0349 billion KRW.
The support targets gas heat pumps installed and operated in private and public facilities before December 31, 2022, that are certified (including planned certification) by the Ministry of Environment and are operating normally. However, gas heat pump units that have been in operation for more than 16 years may be excluded from support due to aging and other factors.
Businesses wishing to apply can refer to the announcement on the Ulsan City website and submit the application form and related documents in person or by mail to the Environmental Division of their respective district or county office from March 4 to March 29.
If selected as a supported business, approximately 90% of the installation cost for pollution control facilities (2,466,000 KRW to 3,322,000 KRW) can be subsidized.
A ‘gas heat pump’ is a heat pump-type cooling and heating device that uses a city gas-powered engine instead of an electric motor to drive the outdoor unit. It was distributed and encouraged as a measure to mitigate summer power peaks, but it emits large amounts of nitrogen oxides and other air pollutants. According to the revision of the Air Environment Conservation Act by the Ministry of Environment, existing installed facilities will be classified as air emission facilities starting January 1, 2025 (new facilities from January 1, 2023).
The law exempts facilities from being classified as air emission facilities if the amount of pollutants emitted is less than 30% of the emission allowance standard or if an emission reduction device certified by the Minister of Environment is attached.
