2000 Jinkwansa Taegukgi Flags Raised on Major Arterial Roads Including Tongil-ro, Eunpyeong-ro, Jeungsan-ro, Yeonseo-ro, and Seooreung-ro...The 'Jinkwansa Taegukgi' Was Used by Monk Baekchowol During the Independence Movement and Designated as a Treasure in 2021
Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced that it will display the Treasure No. 2142, the ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ discovered at Jingwansa Temple, along major arterial roads to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
From February 29 to March 1, 2,000 Jingwansa Taegukgi flags will be hung as horizontal banners along nine major arterial roads including Tongil-ro, Eunpyeong-ro, Jeungsan-ro, Yeonseo-ro, and Seooreung-ro.
Since 2015, Eunpyeong-gu has been displaying the Jingwansa Taegukgi alongside the national flag on both the March 1st Movement Day and Liberation Day every year.
The ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ is a Taegukgi flag used by Monk Baek Chowol during the independence movement and was designated as a treasure in 2021. It was discovered in May 2009 between the altar and pillars during the dismantling and repair work of the Chilseonggak Hall at Jingwansa Temple, along with other independence movement materials, making it a cultural asset of great historical value.
In particular, the Jingwansa Taegukgi is believed to have been made by painting over the Japanese imperial flag with ink to add the Taeguk and four trigrams. It is noted for expressing a strong spirit of resistance against Japanese imperialism.
