Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Holds Briefing on Hydrogen City Development Project... 20 Billion KRW in National Funding Support
After 3 Pilot Cities in 2020, 9 Local Governments Are Now Advancing the Project
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold a briefing session on the hydrogen city development project for local governments nationwide on the 27th from 2 PM to 4 PM at the 4th-floor conference room of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, to select new hydrogen city development projects for 2025.
The hydrogen city development project is a project to establish urban infrastructure such as hydrogen production, transportation and storage (pipelines, etc.), and utilization (fuel cells, etc.) so that hydrogen can be used in residential, business, transportation, and industrial sectors. The use of hydrogen in housing and transportation, which are core urban activities, is a fundamental element.
This involves establishing a hydrogen transportation system based on the installation of hydrogen fuel cells in houses and buildings, and hydrogen charging facilities. Depending on regional conditions, smart farm hydrogen utilization, hydrogen technology development linked with local research institutes, and green hydrogen production facilities using water electrolysis and biogas may also be established.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will support this project with 20 billion KRW in national funds. The total project cost is based on 40 billion KRW (20 billion KRW national funds, 20 billion KRW local funds), but adjustments can be made considering project conditions.
Starting with three hydrogen pilot cities in 2020 (Ulsan, Jeonju·Wanju, Ansan), six cities in 2023 (Pyeongtaek, Namyangju, Dangjin, Boryeong, Gwangyang, Pohang), and three cities this year (Yangju, Buan, Dong-gu in Gwangju), a total of 12 local governments are currently promoting hydrogen city projects.
Local governments are pursuing hydrogen city projects attracted by various aspects such as transitioning to carbon-neutral cities, revitalizing local economies, strengthening the competitiveness of local companies, and creating new jobs.
