“It is truly heartwarming to see children wearing secondhand middle and high school uniforms to help their households. As a mother, I am doing my best to operate the store. I hope people stop by before the new semester to practice environmental conservation in daily life through smart shopping.”
This is what Park Young-sook, president of the Songpa-gu Housewives' Environmental Council, who manages the ‘Nanum Uniform Store’ (246 Munjeong-ro), said. The store, located in Macheon-dong, has seen a significant increase in visits from students and parents looking to purchase uniforms economically for the new school term.
The uniforms, secured through donations from local schools, are inspected and then displayed. They are well organized by school, gender, and season, with prices set at 5,000 won for jackets and only 3,000 won for shirts, pants, skirts, and vests, including daily wear. These affordable prices are ideal for growing adolescents experiencing rapid body changes or transfer students.
There are also helpful tips for new students facing financial difficulties. Although uniform purchase policies vary by school, buying secondhand daily wear that usually does not require school-organized group purchases can save the difference in the admission support funds received at enrollment.
In addition to uniforms, the store offers a variety of handmade items made from recycled resources. Popular products among regular customers include EM (Effective Micro-organism) detergent and soap, known for their excellent efficacy, and coffee grounds compost, which has recently gained attention for its high recycling value. These products allow customers to practice environmental protection in everyday life while being useful.
The ‘Songpa-gu Housewives' Environmental Council’ is a community organization that has been practicing environmental love for 30 years by producing such recycled products and conducting environmental campaigns.
Proceeds from sales are returned to the community by sharing samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) with local seniors in summer and donating funds for a warm winter during the cold season.
The Nanum Uniform Store, operated by about 200 volunteer members, is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on weekends and public holidays. It is convenient to call ahead to check the uniform stock before visiting.
