Man in his 30s Arrested for Defrauding Swiss Victims of 200 Million Won in 'Romance Scam'
A man in his 30s who attempted to swindle money from a Swiss national through a 'romance scam' was arrested by the police.
The Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 16th that they have arrested and are investigating a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of fraud.
According to the police, Mr. A was caught around 4:50 PM the previous day at a subway station in Mapo-gu while coming to collect money, after the victim reported the incident and the police responded.
The victim, a man in his 20s with Swiss nationality, was deceived by the romance scam and transferred approximately 200 million KRW from Switzerland before entering Korea in December last year.
Even after entering the country, the victim was asked by the scammer to transfer about 130 million KRW more. Sensing something suspicious, the victim placed cash in a locker at the subway station to lure the scammer and then reported to the police.
