Amazon Cuts Hundreds More Employees... Harsh Winds Blow Through US Tech Industry
Alexa and Now Healthcare Sector
27,000 Employees Laid Off Since Late 2022
Snap and DocuSign Also Undergo Large-Scale Restructuring
Amid a wave of layoffs sweeping through the US tech industry, the world's largest e-commerce company Amazon is set to cut hundreds of jobs once again.
On the 6th, Bloomberg reported that Amazon will lay off hundreds of employees in its healthcare division.
Neil Lindsay, Senior Vice President of Amazon Health Services, said in a memo to employees that day, "We have identified areas where we can reallocate resources to invest in inventions that directly impact customers," adding, "Unfortunately, these changes will eliminate hundreds of jobs at One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy."
One Medical is a healthcare service provider that Amazon acquired in July 2022 for about $3.9 billion to expand its healthcare business. Additionally, Amazon acquired the online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 and launched the Amazon Pharmacy business in 2020, delivering prescription medications to customers' homes.
Amazon has been continuing restructuring and workforce reductions to cut costs. From the end of 2022 through mid-last year, it laid off about 27,000 employees. Prior to this healthcare sector reduction, Amazon reduced staff in departments such as Alexa, the voice recognition assistant, the music division, Prime Video and Studios, and the live streaming subsidiary Twitch.
