'Big Open Runner-up' Shin Ji-ae, Why Did Her World Ranking Drop?
World Ranking Drops One Spot from 15th to 16th
Top Players Did Not Participate, Resulting in Disadvantageous Points
Bu Ranks 1st, Koda 2nd, Ko Jin-young 6th Positions
Veteran Shin Ji-ae's world ranking has dropped to 16th place.
In the women's golf weekly world rankings announced on the 5th (local time), she received 3.88 points, dropping one spot from 15th place last week. Yang Hee-young rose one spot to 15th. Although Shin Ji-ae finished 2nd at the WPGA Tour Big Open (total prize money of 420,000 Australian dollars) held on the 4th at the Bayon Heads Thirteenth Beach Golf Links Beach Course (par 72) in Victoria, Australia, her world ranking actually fell.
The world ranking is calculated by dividing the total ranking points earned from tournaments participated in over the past two years by the number of tournaments played. Ranking points are assigned considering the world rankings of all participants in each tournament. The Big Open had almost no top-ranked players participating.
Shin Ji-ae earned only 3 ranking points in this tournament, which caused her average score to be overtaken by Yang Hee-young. When she tied for 3rd place at the Australian Women's Open last March, which featured many top players, she received 5.95 world ranking points. As the highest-ranked player among the participants, Shin Ji-ae needed to win to break even in this tournament. She is aiming to participate in the Paris Olympics scheduled for August. If she enters the top 15 in the world rankings by June 24, she can compete in the Olympics.
