Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) is recruiting performance groups to participate in the 2024 Seocho Friday Concert.
Marking its 30th anniversary this year, the 'Seocho Friday Concert' is the longest-running concert series hosted by a local government, with a history of 1,239 performances since its inception as the New Year Concert in 1994.
Featuring not only top-tier orchestras but also musical actors and popular singers, the concert has showcased a wide range of genres including classical, jazz, pop, opera, and gugak, earning long-standing love from Seocho residents as a sophisticated cultural and artistic content. Last year, a total of 61 performance groups held 22 concerts, attracting 11,050 attendees.
This public recruitment will be held for 11 days from February 5 to February 15, selecting a total of 24 groups across four categories: ▲Classical·Orchestra ▲Opera·Vocal ▲Gugak ▲Jazz·Band·Other (Mixed). Applicants must submit related documents including the application form and performance video links.
Last year, 259 groups competed for 24 spots, showing a competition rate of 10 to 1, reflecting the high interest in the Seocho Friday Concert. According to a Seocho-gu official, this is because the concert, known for its history and tradition and regarded as the best concert by residents, is also recognized as a prestigious stage that performers aspire to appear on.
One group that performed last year said, “We were surprised by the sophisticated audience manners and cheers of Seocho residents,” adding, “Especially, the Seocho Friday Concert YouTube channel is already well-known among performers for its high-quality visuals. We are grateful to Seocho-gu and its residents for the opportunity to deliver a wonderful performance.”
The selection of performance groups will be conducted through expert review considering factors such as project execution capability, excellence of the performance program, and appropriateness of the requested performance fee relative to the content. Selected groups will receive ▲an average event fee worth about 3 million KRW ▲free use of the performance venue ▲and access to venue auxiliary facilities. Performances are scheduled to take place between April and December this year at Seocho Cultural and Arts Center Art Hall (650 seats) or Banpo Simsang Art Hall (400 seats), among others.
Details regarding the application process can be found on the Seocho-gu Office website, and inquiries can be directed to the Seocho-gu Office Culture and Tourism Division.
