Delay in Decision on Sacheon Temporary Office for Space Aviation Agency... Contract by End of This Month
Additional Submissions Accepted After Closing of Government Building Contest on 2nd
Contract Scheduled by End of February... Concerns Over Tight Preparation Period for Government Building
Securing a temporary office for the Space Aviation Agency is not easy. The Ministry of Science and ICT held a public contest to secure a suitable building within Sacheon-si for the temporary office location but decided to re-open the contest. The contract schedule for the Space Aviation Agency's temporary office is also being delayed. Even if the contract is finalized, the preparation period will be insufficient, so thorough support is necessary.
Minister Lee Jong-ho of the Ministry of Science and ICT announced plans related to the establishment of the Space Aviation Agency on the afternoon of January 11 at the Government Seoul Office in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

On the 5th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced an additional public contest for the Space Aviation Agency's temporary office building. Applications will be accepted for two days from the announcement date until the 6th, followed by an evaluation committee meeting and selection of the preferred negotiator from the 7th to the 14th. The original plan was to close applications on the 2nd and hold the evaluation committee by the 8th to select the preferred negotiator. This means a delay of about one week.
After selecting the preferred negotiator, detailed negotiations and lease contract schedules were further extended. The original plan was to conclude the lease contract between the 13th and 15th, but with the re-contest, the lease contract is now scheduled to be signed by the end of February. As a result, the lease contract is delayed by about two weeks, making the preparation period for moving into the temporary office even tighter.
It has been reported that only a few building owners applied for this contest. There is a possibility that no additional applications were received beyond the candidate sites recommended by Sacheon-si and Gyeongsangnam-do. The Ministry of Science and ICT appeared to have inspected the three sites recommended by the city and province and narrowed down the location to two, but decided to proceed with the contest process to give other buildings a chance.
Lee Jae-hyung, head of the Space Aviation Agency Establishment Promotion Team at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said immediately after the application deadline, "The number of building owners who applied was smaller than expected, and we plan to decide on the temporary office building by early next week," but ultimately, a re-contest was decided. He explained the reason for the re-contest, saying, "Since only a few building owners submitted proposals, we decided to accept additional applications."
Locally, it is seen as difficult to secure a building that meets the standards required by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The Ministry set the condition for the temporary office building to be over 4,000㎡ and available for early use, but such buildings are rare. Because of this, the Ministry is also known to plan to select a preferred contract negotiator from the existing applicants if no additional applications are received.
