9 out of 10 Residents in Yongin "Satisfied with Overall Life"
65% Say "Will Still Live in Yongin After 10 Years"
Yongin City's '2023 Social Survey' Results
Among residents living in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, 9 out of 10 showed a satisfaction level of 'medium' or higher with their overall life. 65% of residents expressed their intention to continue living in Yongin even after 10 years.
Yongin City announced on the 26th that these results came from the '2023 17th Yongin City Social Survey' conducted to understand citizens' social interests and awareness. The survey was conducted from September 1 to September 15 last year, targeting 1,590 sample households and citizens aged 15 or older. The margin of error is ±3.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
The survey included a total of 50 questions, consisting of six common areas such as welfare, housing and transportation, culture and leisure, education, income and consumption, jobs and labor, and one area specific to Yongin's characteristics.
'Satisfaction with Life' Increased by 10.6 Percentage Points Over 4 Years
In this survey, 90.9% responded that they were satisfied with the overall regional aspects such as housing, economy, and education at a level of 'medium or average (on a 5-point scale)' or higher. Satisfaction was measured using the OECD common indicator for subjective personal life satisfaction, segmented from 'not satisfied at all (0 points)' to 'very satisfied (10 points)', and includes respondents who answered 'medium (5 points)' or higher.
This result is 10.6 percentage points higher compared to the 80.3% satisfaction rate in the 2019 survey conducted four years ago, and also increased by 7.5 percentage points compared to 83.4% in 2021.
The average satisfaction score for the region was 6.2 out of 10. Notably, 65% said they would continue to live in Yongin after 10 years. Additionally, the proportion of respondents who felt a sense of belonging to the region reached 69.8%. This also shows a continuous upward trend following 65.4% in 2019 and 66.7% in 2021.
On the other hand, 9.1% of respondents said they were 'not satisfied with the city overall.' Among the reasons for dissatisfaction, 46.0% cited 'inconvenient transportation.' This was followed by 19.8% citing 'lack of convenience facilities' and 10.4% citing 'lack of parking facilities.'
'Expansion of Transportation Network' is the Top Priority
The average commuting time for citizens was found to be 37.7 minutes by private car, 51.5 minutes by bus, and 63.6 minutes by subway. Because of this, more than half, 51.7%, used private cars as their commuting method. The average travel times outside the region were 76.7 minutes to Seoul, 82.9 minutes to Incheon, and 46.6 minutes to other areas within the province.
This was also reflected in the responses to 'necessary policy tasks.' 42.8% answered 'improvement of commuting transportation environment.' This was followed by 14.0% for fostering future growth industries and creating a business-friendly city, and 8.9% for strengthening public welfare services. In particular, 58.4% responded that 'expansion of connected transportation networks such as roads and railways' is necessary to support the semiconductor industry, which Yongin City is nurturing as a future growth engine.
Other public facilities needed in the region included parks, green spaces, and walking trails (32.8%), healthcare facilities (25.6%), and public parking facilities (22.4%).
To Overcome Low Birthrate, 'Housing, Jobs, and Marriage Support Policies' are the Top Priority
When asked about necessary policies to address the low birthrate, 36.8% of respondents chose 'housing, jobs, and marriage support policies.' This was followed by 29.9% for care and education support policies and 28.5% for direct childbirth support policies.
Among the most preferred 'housing, jobs, and marriage support policies,' 54.7% favored 'support for interest on monthly rent and jeonse (long-term deposit) loans.' This indicates that high housing prices are a significant reason for avoiding marriage and childbirth. Next, 21.5% answered 'strengthening support for youth employment linkage.'
