Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) held a gathering to pledge the first step toward a great transformation for the future of Yongsan together with its residents.
On the 25th, the district held the ‘2024 New Year Greeting Meeting’ at the Yongsan Art Hall Grand Theater to welcome the Year of Gapjin. At the event, Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, exchanged New Year greetings and well-wishes with about 800 attendees, including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Yongsan District Council Chairman Oh Cheon-jin, city and district council members, various dignitaries, and resident representatives, and presented the district’s goals and vision for the year.
Before the event, Mayor Park personally greeted and shook hands with attendees entering the venue to welcome the residents who came to the New Year greeting meeting.
The main event, hosted by a Yongsan ITV announcer, proceeded for 1 hour and 40 minutes in the following order: ▲Pre-performance by Yongsan District Choir ▲Opening declaration ▲National ceremony ▲Introduction of guests ▲New Year greetings and well-wishes ▲New Year address and district administration explanation (Yongsan District Mayor) ▲Seoul city budget and administration explanation (Seoul Mayor) ▲New Year performance ▲Closing.
In his New Year address, Mayor Park emphasized, “This year’s district administration goal is set as ‘the start of a great transformation for the future of Yongsan,’” and pledged, “I will begin the first step of this great transformation together with the residents.” He presented five major visions to achieve this and vowed to put them into practice.
(▲Establishing a foundation for future food sources ▲Sustainable city ▲Smart safety city ▲Laying the foundation for a global education city ▲Inclusive welfare city)
First, Mayor Park stated, “We will attract advanced new industries and turn various cultural resources into a tourism belt” to “create a sustainable foundation for future food sources.” He declared to the residents that he would work in step with Seoul City for the successful development of the International Business District and Yongsan Electronics Market, which are at the center of this effort. He also explained plans to ‘localize’ Itaewon and Yongmaru-gil as local brands and to discover and foster additional alleyway commercial districts.
Furthermore, he said, “We will make Yongsan, where active development is underway, a nature-friendly and ‘sustainable city,’” and pledged, “We will strive to gift Yongsan Park to residents as soon as possible.” He also promised support to ensure that redevelopment and reconstruction projects underway throughout Yongsan proceed without setbacks.
He continued, “We will realize a 24-hour safe, people-centered ‘smart safety city,’” and promised, “We will introduce safety insurance for residents affected by unexpected accidents and disasters and install 200 intelligent selective surveillance CCTV cameras annually, totaling 800 units by 2026.”
Next, Mayor Park announced plans to “establish the foundation for a ‘global education city’ to nurture future talents,” stating, “We will promote an education internationalization special zone for global talent development and build a cooperative system with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, which is relocating to Huam-dong.”
Finally, he said, “We will realize an ‘inclusive welfare city’ so that no resident is left behind or faces hardship amid urban changes,” and added, “We will take care of projects that residents truly need, such as Yongsan-style study cafes for youth, metropolitan job cafes for job-seeking young people, and sign language video production of Yongsan district newsletters for information-vulnerable groups.”
Following the district mayor’s New Year address, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon presented the city administration’s operational direction titled ‘A Special City of Charm Created Together with Yongsan-gu.’
The event concluded with the Yongsan District Mayor, Seoul Mayor, and Yongsan District Council Chairman coming on stage to perform the New Year’s resident wish tree performance. This performance involved placing residents’ New Year wishes, collected in advance, onto the resident wish tree, praying for their fulfillment. The specially made resident wish tree, enhanced with splendid visuals, received enthusiastic applause from attendees.
