At this meeting, Ambassador Paul Duclos emphasized, "Arequipa, one of the host cities of the 31st APEC Summit held this year, signed a sister city agreement with Gyeongju in 2015, creating a deep connection between the two cities," and added, "We will share Peru's experience and know-how as the APEC chair country with Gyeongju."
In fact, Peru has hosted the APEC Summit three times since joining as a member in 1998, in 2008, 2016, and this year.
The 31st APEC Summit to be held this year will feature various meetings and events in five Peruvian cities (Trujillo, Arequipa, Urubamba, Pucallpa, Lima), with the summit itself scheduled to take place in the capital, Lima, in November.
Mayor Ju Nak-young of Gyeongju highlighted that "there is no disagreement that Gyeongju is the best place to showcase Korea's traditional culture as the host city of the 2025 APEC Summit," and requested the support of the Peruvian Ambassador for Gyeongju's bid.
The mayor continued, "The ambassador's visit to Gyeongju in the year Peru is the APEC chair country will greatly aid Gyeongju's efforts to host the 2025 APEC Summit," and repeatedly urged, "Please take a keen interest so that the APEC Summit can be held in Gyeongju, a representative Korean historical and cultural tourism city where future industries such as nuclear power and electric vehicles coexist."
