General Yi Sun-sin Victory Site Pilgrimage Route
Selected for Pilot Project
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced on the 24th that the project to create a coastal sea view trail around Jinhae Port has been selected as a pilot project for the ‘Admiral Yi Sun-sin Victory Sites Pilgrimage Project’.
Kim Jong-pil, Director of the Maritime Port and Fisheries Bureau, is holding a regular briefing.
View original imageThe Admiral Yi Sun-sin Victory Sites Pilgrimage Project is part of a South Coast tourism belt development initiative aimed at transforming the naval battle sites and Baekui Jonggun trails into global tourist attractions by promoting the victory stories and cultural tourism resources shared by three South Coast provinces and cities (Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Busan). In Gyeongnam, a total budget of 41.1 billion KRW will be invested by 2026 across five cities and counties including Changwon.
The Changwon city project section spans a total of 7 km, starting from the Naval Academy Museum, passing through Sokcheon Port, Jinhaeru, Sojukdo Park, and ending at the entrance of Jangcheon Pier. It will include the installation of a beautiful coastal walking trail with sea views, an observatory, and one marine pedestrian bridge, with a total project cost of 18 billion KRW.
Last year, the city established a mid- to long-term development plan for Changwon’s ports and a comprehensive development plan for Jinhae Port, envisioning the expansion of waterfront and recreational spaces linked to the scenic coastline and historical stories. This plan aims to create a tourist cultural space where citizens and visitors to Jinhae Port can enjoy the beautiful Jinhae sea views while experiencing history. This was connected to the Admiral Yi Sun-sin Victory Sites Pilgrimage Project, leading to its selection as a pilot project.
Once the coastal walking trail and resting spaces themed around Admiral Yi Sun-sin are created in the Jinhae Port area, it is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy by attracting tourists through connections with existing historical resources such as the Naval Academy Museum, the Turtle Ship landscape lighting on Daejukdo Island, the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue at Bukwon Rotary (the first of its kind in Korea), the Baekbeom Kim Gu handwritten poem monument at Namwon Rotary (the only one in Korea), the 70-ri Jinhae Sea Trail, Imjin War naval battle sites (Happo, Ungpo, Angolpo battles), Jinhae cherry blossom tourist spots, and the old downtown commercial district.
In particular, if the coastline section from the Naval Academy to Sokcheon Port is opened to the public for the first time in 80 years, it is expected that visitors’ satisfaction with the coastal views will be very high.

Kim Jong-pil, Director of the Marine Port and Fisheries Bureau, said, “We will enhance the city’s prestige by creating a coastal viewing trail that allows citizens to enjoy relaxation and leisure by the sea, connecting the Jinhae sea (Daejukdo battle site) protected by Admiral Yi Sun-sin with the Naval Academy Museum where the Turtle Ship from the Imjin War has been restored to its original form.”
