On the 24th at 2 PM, Busan City will hold an 'Emergency On-site Inspection Meeting for Industrial Accident Prevention' chaired by Mayor Park Hyung-jun in the conference room of the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
This meeting was organized to review preventive measures by related organizations and seek effective prevention strategies to reduce industrial accidents in the region, following a series of fatal industrial accidents at workplaces in Busan.
Over the past three weeks since the 20th of last month, 10 fatal industrial accidents have occurred in the Busan area.
About 10 participants will attend, including the mayor, the head of the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office, the chairman of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, the president of the Busan Employers Federation, the president of the Construction Association, and heads of private accident prevention organizations.
The meeting will proceed by receiving reports on ▲the current status of industrial accidents in the region and ▲prevention measures by each organization, and jointly reviewing prevention strategies with the attendees.
It aims to build consensus on ▲the active role of related organizations to revitalize industrial safety governance, ▲the importance of establishing a safety culture that habituates safety, and ▲the responsible role of all members of society as safety and health stakeholders.
The mayor will preside over the meeting and emphasize the role of local related organizations in preventing industrial accidents, including ▲expanding technical and financial support that supervisory agencies can tangibly feel on-site and ▲establishing a safety and health management system jointly operated by employers and workers from the field.
Following the inspection meeting, the mayor will visit the construction site of the 'Oncheon 4 District Housing Redevelopment Project' and conduct a joint inspection with officials from the Labor Office and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
The mayor plans to listen to the difficulties faced by on-site personnel and urge greater caution, noting that the construction industry site has a high risk of accidents due to factors such as an aging workforce and the use of hazardous and dangerous machinery and equipment, which could lead to major accidents.
He will also encourage employers and workers to jointly establish a safety and health management system and to thoroughly manage and supervise the work site to ensure safety.
Additionally, on the occasion of the 'On-site Inspection Day' by the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office, Busan City, the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office, and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency will visit about 70 industrial sites on the 24th to check compliance with safety and health measures focusing on the three major accidents and eight major risk factors.
The 'three major accidents and eight major risk factors' include (falls) scaffolding, roofs, ladders, aerial work platforms, steel frames and formwork supports; (entrapment) protective devices; and (collisions) mixed work and collision prevention devices.
The inspection targets include ▲construction sites ordered by local governments ▲construction sites costing less than 2 billion KRW or more than 12 billion KRW ▲manufacturing and service workplaces possessing hazardous and dangerous machinery or cranes in industries vulnerable to fatal accidents.
If any issues are found during the joint inspection, immediate on-site correction will be requested first, and if corrective actions are inadequate, further labor supervision such as disciplinary action by the Labor Office may follow.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “To prevent the recurrence of tragic accidents caused by industrial disasters, the city, the Labor Office, and all members of industrial sites must be vigilant about industrial accidents and listen to the voices from the field,” adding, “I hope everyone will strive to establish a self-regulatory prevention system focused on accident prevention starting from the workplace so that all workers can work in safe and healthy environments.”
