Nowon-gu Launches '10 Promises for Carbon Neutrality Citizen Practice' Initiative
Selection of '10 Promises for Nowon Citizens' through Nowon Residents Survey at 2023 Environment Day Event
Practices for January and February: 'Walk Short Distances, Use Bicycles and Public Transport'
Encouraging Nowon Residents' Participation in Carbon Neutrality and Promoting ESG Values through Practice Events
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will raise awareness of environmental protection and participate in reducing carbon emissions through the ‘Nowon Citizens' 10 Practice Promises’ campaign.
The ‘Nowon Citizens' 10 Practice Promises’ campaign was finally selected on Environment Day last June. Among a total of 35 rules across 5 categories, Nowon residents participated in a survey to select 10 promises, which were then finalized through expert consultations.
The ‘Nowon Citizens' 10 Practice Promises’ are ▲ Expanding renewable energy ▲ Using low-carbon electrical products ▲ Reducing household electricity consumption ▲ Purchasing electric and hydrogen vehicles ▲ Walking short distances and using bicycles and public transportation ▲ Reducing food and household waste ▲ Using reusable shopping bags and tumblers and practicing thorough waste separation ▲ Reducing tap water and hot water usage ▲ Creating urban forests and greening homes and neighborhoods ▲ Learning, promoting, and sharing carbon neutrality.
The practice themes are changed every two months in collaboration with the ‘Nowon Environmental Foundation,’ the only environmental foundation established by a district in Seoul. The district is conducting events to encourage active participation from residents.
The theme for January and February is ‘Walking short distances and using bicycles and public transportation.’ To participate, residents must practice one of the following: using public transportation or bicycles, or walking more than 1,000 steps, then upload a proof photo on the Nowon Environmental Foundation website.
The registration process is simple. Scan the QR code at the bottom of the event popup on the Nowon Environmental Foundation website, then upload the proof photo along with a pledge to practice carbon neutrality.
The participation period is until February 29, and 50 participants will be selected by lottery to receive Starbucks mobile gift cards. The winners will be announced on March 8.
Meanwhile, last year, Nowon-gu held the ‘1st Nowon Car-Free Street Festival,’ the first event of its kind among Seoul’s districts. The festival not only aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting down on disposable products but also calculated the total greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the event and challenged carbon zero by offsetting the actual emissions. This year, the district plans to hold a tree-planting event on Arbor Day with residents to offset carbon emissions.
