Thought They Were Snowflakes... The Identity of Over 100,000 Particles Covering the Lake
Guardian Report: Incident at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA
Recently, strong winds swept through a lake area in the United States, causing approximately 100,000 Styrofoam beads to be blown onto some shores, according to foreign media including The Guardian on the 11th (local time).
The Guardian reported that on the 6th, strong winds hit the northern part of Lake Tahoe in Nevada, causing a floating dock on the lake to break loose. As a result, more than 100,000 Styrofoam beads broken off from the floating structure were swept onto the shore of Incline Village to the north and were first discovered by local residents the following day.

The volunteers used all kinds of equipment including blowers, waterproof tarps, cordless vacuum cleaners, sieves, and buckets to remove the Styrofoam beads. It was reported that the removal was particularly difficult because the Styrofoam beads were mixed with sand and snow.
In a statement, Clean Up the Lake expressed concern, saying, "The Styrofoam beads, presumed to be made of expanded polystyrene, can have adverse effects on aquatic life and pose a serious threat to environmental health," adding, "The Styrofoam beads will further worsen the environmental issues already facing the lake."
Colin West, the representative of the organization, said, "Thanks to the volunteers, we conducted a large-scale cleanup and removed as much as 90% of the Styrofoam beads," adding, "This spill is truly terrible and one of the most difficult cases to clean up."
