Russia Car Market's No.1 Foreign Brand: Chinese Chery
Sanctions Impact: Kia Surpasses Hyundai Motor Company
According to the Russian daily Kommersant on the 10th (local time), citing automotive market analysis firm Autostat, Chinese car manufacturers have surpassed South Korea's Kia and Hyundai to become the top-selling foreign car brands in Russia.
According to the report, Chinese automaker Chery sold 118,950 units in Russia last year, tripling its sales compared to the previous year and securing the number one spot in the market. In addition to Chery, other Chinese car brands ranked 2nd to 5th in new foreign car sales in Russia last year.
Haval sold 111,720 units, a 3.3-fold increase from the previous year; Geely sold 93,550 units, 3.5 times more; and Changan sold 47,760 units, an 18.7-fold increase.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Kia (33,580 units) and Hyundai (24,660 units), which had maintained leading positions until 2021, fell to 8th and 9th place respectively. Before the Russia-Ukraine war and the introduction of Western sanctions in 2021, Kia and Hyundai were the top two best-selling foreign car brands in Russia, with annual sales of 205,801 and 167,331 units respectively.
