On the 8th (local time), major foreign media reported that Steven Griffin (46), a science teacher working at a high school in Houston, Texas, was charged with having sexual relations multiple times with an underage 18-year-old student.
In September 2022, Griffin had lunch with the female student at her request and gave her his phone number, telling her to contact him if she had any difficulties. Over the next few months, the two kept in touch and had their first sexual encounter in November of the same year at a hotel. They reportedly engaged in sexual relations in various locations including the hotel, classroom, and inside a car. At the time, Griffin was preparing for a divorce from his wife, and it is reported that in return for the sexual relations, he repeatedly gave the student answer sheets to help her score 100 points.
Eventually, the female student's mother learned about their relationship and reported it to the police. In December of last year, Griffin was arrested on charges of having sexual relations with a minor. According to Texas state law, if a teacher has sexual relations with a student, it is classified as a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 (approximately 13 million KRW).
