Lee Ji-hyeok, who won the East Asia regional championship, received the association president’s award along with a prize of 2 million KRW and earned the right to participate in the world competition featuring winners from five regions. The world competition is scheduled to be held in London, UK, this coming April.
Lee Ji-hyeok said, “We prepared for the competition by competing in teams within our club, and I shared many ideas with great teammates to develop new processes. Because there were excellent competitors in the club, I was able to stay motivated and work hard until the end.” He also stated that he aims to win the world competition.
Hosted by the World Steel Association and organized by the Korea Iron & Steel Association, the ‘Steel Challenge’ is a competition where participants use steel manufacturing process simulations to compete in calculating the production cost of products within a given time.
The competition is divided into five regional contests: East Asia, West Asia, North Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas.
The 18th competition was held on November 29 last year, with 1,649 participants from 50 companies and 77 universities worldwide competing in events such as ‘Electric Arc Furnace’ and ‘Secondary Refining.’
South Korea, part of the East Asia region, had a record number of participants this year with 282 students from 19 universities.
Since 2020, Dong-A University has demonstrated strong capabilities by producing many award winners annually at this competition. At the 17th competition, student Choi Jae-sung won the East Asia regional championship and went on to win the world competition.
